Clutch problem

Postby tangoflash on 21 Jul 2008, 15:45

Hi to one and all. My 1st posting here. was riding my PX last week and my clutch went completely. I managed to limp it home and on a quick inspection i noticed that there seemed very little tension on the clutch arm when pulling in the clutch. it does spring back, so assuming the spring is not a problem, but tension nowhere near what it was when i fitted cable previously.

Now i do realise that i'm gonna have to "crack it open" to be sure what the problem is but i was just fishing for ideas as i have only owned this scoot for a couple of months after a 20yr gap from scootering (yes, i'm another one of those fucking born agains with a mid-life crisis) and this is my 1st vespa as i previosly had lammys.

I have very limited experience with tinkering but looking forward to charging head on into this with my manual in one hand and a club hammer in the other.
Just wondering before i start if there are any specialist tools i will require?

no doubt there'll be a grown up along soon. Scubas recently changed a clutch in his PX ;) ...In the meantime it would be nice if you said hello in the "new members" section. everyone can say hello to you then :clapping:

Hi Tangoflash, as Cec said a proper introduction would be nice just so we know who we are talking too.

Anyway on to the problem.

This maybe a daft question but the problem isn't a stretched cable or slipped trunion is it (with you mentioning new cable)?

If the cable is fine you can get to the clutch without removing the engine from the frame you just need the rear wheel and hub off and then remove the three screws on the clutch cover.
Their are a couple of tools you will need, a clutch nut tool to remove the castle nut http://beedspeed.com/tool-clutch-nut-tool-vespa-p-230.html?cPath=76_93&osCsid=74cdca6aa6dfbbcc26599632d23564f4 £5.99 from Beedspeed.

You will also need a clutch compressor tool to compress the clutch so you can remove the clutch plates, a long bolt and nut can be used but for less than a fiver you might as well have the correct tool for the job http://beedspeed.com/tool-clutch-compressor-vespa-p-231.html?cPath=76_93&osCsid=74cdca6aa6dfbbcc26599632d23564f4 £4.75 from Beedspeed.

Hope this helps

maby your outer cable has gone mine went and the outer cable has no tension on it so it did move the clutch but nowhere near enough to disengage it i removed and fitted the cable 4 times befor i realised what was wrong lol i used a small socket to stop the outer cable from going through the hole befor i changed it 2 days later
